AME Golf Challenge report from Steve Westaway:
On Friday 18th August Alex Haste and Shaun Smith from Bakare Beds Ltd teed it up with Steve Westaway and Simon house in the 3rd of our match play challenges.
From the very first hole Steve and Simon were under pressure when Alex had a tap in birdie to go one up. Simon needed to make a 20 foot birdie putt on the second hole just for the half and in it dropped. A great birdie putt from Alex from off the green on the 3rd, put the team from Bakare Beds 2 up. What was going on!!!. The 4th, 5th and 6th holes were halved and then the game turned. Steve had a par on 7 and a birdie on 8 to bring it back to all square. Another par from Steve on the 9th could not be matched, meaning AME were now 1 up for the first time and a great way to finish the front 9. 2 bad tee shots from alex and Shaun on 10, meant that AME had gone from 2 down to 2 up in four holes. A very bizarre incident then followed…
Steve and Simon hit 2 massive drives on the 11th and were only a few feet apart on the fairway. With just 70 yards to go and waiting for the other guys to play Steve identified the first ball was Simon’s, but after waiting for the others to play and chatting for a few minutes he forgot what day of the week it was (probably his own name as well) and played a great shot to just a couple of feet. Steve, feeling very satisfied with his shot, looked back at Simon who went to the other ball (both play a Titleist ProV 1x with a black line) and saw that the ball was in fact Steve’s. With a very puzzled look on his face, it then sunk in what had happened and AME were out of the hole and it was back to 1 up. An embarrassed Steve is very happy to forgot about this, but no doubt Simon will remind him for a few weeks at least.
The 12th hole was halved and then Simon made a great birdie putt on the 13th to put AME back to 2 up. The 14th hole was halved before Simon made a really good par on 15th, one of the hardest holes on the course. 3 up with 3 to play. Pars from Steve and Simon on 16 could not be matched by Alex or Shaun which means AME won 4&2. After being 2 down after 3 holes it was a great come back from Steve and Simon to take the win.
Great effort from Alex and Shaun who were playing Exeter Golf and Country Club for the first time.
Next up on Friday 1st September is Richard Jenkins and Jim Masters from ETS Group.
