What is Antivirus software?
Anti-virus (or Antivirus) software is used to safeguard IT equipment from malware including viruses and trojans. Antivirus software is designed to prevent, search for, detect and remove software viruses and other malicious software.
The term “malware” is a catch-all phrase for ,any type of malicious software, such as viruses, worms Trojans and spyware. In fact, the term malware comes from combining the words malicious and software.
If your computer has become infected by malware, a cyber attacker can capture all of your keystrokes, steal your documents and datd or use your computer to attack others. Contrary to what some people believe, any operating system, including Mac OS X and Linux, can be infected
How antivirus software works?
There are two main ways in which antivirus software detects or identifies malware; signature detection and behaviour detection.
Signature Detection scans your computer for characteristics or signatures of programs that are known to be malicious, it does this by referencing a dictionary of known malware and if it finds something that matches then the software attempts to neutralise it. The problem is that malicious software is developed so quickly that antivirus vendors do struggle to keep up.
With behaviour protection, the antivirus software does not attempt to identify known malware but rather monitors the behaviour of the software that is installed on your computer. When a software program acts suspiciously it alerts you to it – such suspicious behaviour would be trying to access protected files or modify another program. This approach is more substantial in protecting your computers as it protects against brand new types of malware that do not exist in the dictionary yet.
Antivirus software is an important part of secure not only your PC but your business network. However the key point to remember is that regardless of which method your antivirus solution uses, it will not be able to protect you from all types of malware especially the recent ransomware attacks. Therefore you are the best defence against cyber attacks, its vital you stay vigilant in trying to avoid clicking or opening anything you feel looks suspicious or that you were not expecting.
Whats the difference between free and paid for versions?
Antivirus software can be a free version or a paid version. Free Antivirus software are programmed to perform a signature-based detection. While paid antivirus program implements the behavioural technique to capture zero day threats or any other new form of threats.
In addition to this free antivirus software is not fit nor licensed for business use.
Total Malware detected in the last 10 Years. The AV-TEST Institute registers over 390,000 new malicious programs every day. These are examined using the analysis tools Sunshine and VTEST, classified according to their characteristics and saved. Visualisation programs then transform the results into diagrams that can be updated and produce current malware statistics.
