Beta of Windows 7 update due in July - 8th June 2010

Microsoft said Monday it expects to have a public beta by July for the first service pack update to Windows 7.

The announcement came at the start of Microsoft's TechEd conference, being held this week in New Orleans.

UK networks announce iPhone 4 plans - 8th June 2010

Britain's mobile networks have been quick to announce their iPhone 4 plans - but none of them have yet been willing to commit to a price.

The iPhone 4 is set to go on sale in the UK on 24 June - the same day as it's launched in the US.

O2, which held the UK exclusive on the iPhone until the end of last year, is encouraging customers to register their interest in the iPhone 4 and is even taking addresses, so that it can send out the new Micro-SIMs before the official launch, but has yet to announce prices.

Apple unveils iPhone 4 - 8th June 2010

Steve Jobs has unveiled the Apple iPhone 4, calling it the biggest leap since the original iPhone, with a new display, HD video camera and gyroscope.

Available from 24 June, the iPhone 4 will cost $199 for the 16GB version or $299 for a 32GB version on a two-year contract in the US. While pre-orders will start 15 June, Carphone Warehouse and O2 are already taking pre-registration for orders in the UK.

It will be available in five countries including the UK on that date.

Microsoft and Adobe patch flaws - 9th June 2010

Microsoft has released one of its biggest security fixes, including a repair to its widely used Excel spreadsheet for flaws that could allow hackers to take control of a user's PC.

Adobe separately said that it would issue an update to its Flash Player tomorrow to address a vulnerability in the current version that hackers were exploiting to secretly gain remote access to computers.

Internet users 'face security risk' - 7th June 2010

One in 10 internet users is surfing the web without security protection and putting their personal information at risk, a new study found. Security expert AVG said web users underestimate the financial and emotional cost of losing valuable data from their computers.

A survey conducted by the anti-virus software provider found that £718 million worth of downloaded music is at risk because people who store their music online do not have adequate security.

HP gives printers email addresses - 7th June 2010

HP is set to unveil a line of printers with their own email addresses, allow people to print from devices such as smartphones and the iPad.

The company last year released a web-connected, touchscreen printer - the Photosmart Premium Touchsmart Web - but the new line-up will be the first to feature their own dedicated email addresses.

Microsoft to patch 34 flaws - 4th June 2010

Microsoft is to patch 34 flaws in its products this month, including one that would let attackers access personal data via Internet Explorer.  Microsoft will release the ten patches next week, as part of its monthly Patch Tuesday update cycle.

Zen prepares fibre broadband launch - 4th June 2010

Zen Internet is preparing to unveil its fibre broadband packages - but warns that 100Mbits/sec fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) is still months away.

The Rochdale ISP is one of the few ISPs that has announced plans to offer customers fibre broadband based on BT's network.

The company will initially offer up to 40Mbits/sec fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) lines in areas covered by BT's fibre rollout from September.

McAfee buys Trust Digital for iPhone enterprise safety - 2nd June 2010

McAfee has bought privately-held enterprise mobility management and security startup Trust Digital. The terms of the deal, announced Tuesday, were undisclosed.

The agreement will allow McAfee to offer a wider range of enterprise-targeted mobile security products for smartphone platforms, including iPhone OS, Android, Web OS, Windows Mobile and Symbian. Trust Digital's technology will be integrated into McAfee's ePolicy Orchestrator management console technology. This symbiosis will guard against such risks as malicious downloads of applications onto smartphone devices.
