Apple upgrades MacBook Pro models - 14th April 2010

Apple has announced a series of upgrades to its MacBook Pro range.

The 13in, 15in and 17in laptops have been given a hardware overhaul, with the larger models refreshed with Intel Core i5 and i7 processors. The 15in and 17in models also sport an Nvidia GeForce GT 330M graphics card combined with integrated Intel HD Graphics, with the MacBook automatically switching between the two as necessary.

Microsoft unveils Kin – its latest smartphone - 13th April 2010

Microsoft hopes to take on the growing importance of bitter rivals Apple and Google in the mobile phone market with a new range of its own mobile devices that focus on social networking.

Its new "Kin" range of mobile phones have slide-out qwerty keyboards – with the smaller device bearing an uncanny resemblance to the Palm Pre – and will be arriving in the US within weeks. British mobile phone users, however, will have to wait until the autumn when the Kin devices will be available on the Vodafone network.

Microsoft promises Exchange 2010 SP1 this year - 9th April 2010

Microsoft promises Exchange 2010 SP1 this year, this update will add archive and retention features, and improvements to Outlook Web Access.

Exchange Server 2010 shipped in November, but the Service Pack 1 update is set for release before the end of this year, according to a posting on the Microsoft Exchange Team blog. A beta will be available for customers to download in June.

Apple iPad users report wi-fi problems - 8th April 2010

Some owners of the newly-available iPad have reported problems with connecting their devices to wi-fi. Hundreds have complained about weak signals on the tablet computer.

Apple acknowledged on its support page that "under certain conditions, iPad may not automatically rejoin a known wi-fi network".

It offered a fix, but suggested that it was a router issue, despite some users saying that other devices worked fine on the same wi-fi connection.

Nokia to launch Apple iPad rival - 7th April 2010

Nokia is working on its own tablet computer, scheduled for release later this year, according to a tech industry analyst.

In addition to Nokia, Ashok Kumar, an analyst with Rodman and Renshaw, claimed PC and handset vendors such as Samsung are set to follow Apple's move into a new category of devices between PCs and smartphones.

Super-fast broadband tax scrapped - 7th April 2010

The broadband tax has been scrapped in the last-minute scramble to rush key legislation through before Parliament is dissolved next week. The tax was a key part of Labour's strategy to ensure all parts of the country get super-fast broadband. The Conservatives have always opposed the tax, preferring to allow the market more time to roll out services before government intervention.

The 50p-a-month broadband tax would have been applied to all households with a landline telephone. It is estimated that it would have raised about £170m a year to help fund broadband roll-out.

Hard work ahead for iPad - 6th April 2010

Apple sold 300,000 iPads on the first day of launch, but analysts have warned the hard sell is still ahead.

According to the company, those sales "included deliveries of pre-ordered iPads to customers, deliveries to channel partners and sales at Apple Retail Stores."

Surge in mobile data leads to cheaper calls - 1st April 2010

The cost of making calls to mobile phones could fall following new rules imposed by regulator Ofcom.

The fall follows a sharp cut in termination rates - the charges mobile companies impose for connecting calls to their network. Ofcom has decreed that these charges will fall from 4.3p per minute today (4.6p on the 3 network) to 0.5p in 2015. The charges will decrease on a sliding scale over the next five years.

Microsoft issues emergency patch for 10 IE holes - 31st March 2010

Microsoft issued an emergency security update on Tuesday to plug 10 holes in Internet Explorer, including a critical vulnerability that has been exploited in attacks in the wild.

The cumulative update, which Microsoft announced on Monday, resolves nine privately reported flaws and one that was publicly disclosed.
