Dotcom web address celebrates silver anniversary - 16th March 2010 |

The internet celebrates a landmark event on the 15 March - the 25th birthday of the day the first dotcom name was registered. In March 1985, Symbolics computers of Cambridge, Massachusetts entered the history books with an internet address ending in dotcom. That same year another five companies jumped on a very slow bandwagon. It took until 1997, well into the internet boom, before the one millionth dotcom was registered. Read more.... iPad got a dead battery? Have a new one - 15th March 2010 |

Apple has taken the extraordinary decision to send new iPads to customers requiring replacement batteries. Apple's products are renowned for their sealed cases, which prevent users from replacing batteries themselves. Instead, customers are forced to return the products to Apple service centres, where the company normally replaces dead batteries for a fee. However, according to a support notice on Apple's website, the company will simply swap out iPads that require fresh cells.

Apple's iPad pre-sale begins today in US - 12th March 2010 |

Today is the first on-sale day for Apple's iPad in the US, the tablet-styled device that CEO Steve Jobs has repeatedly called "magical" and "revolutionary." You won't be able to get your hands on an iPad for another three weeks - Apple has set April 3 as the ship date. But at least US customers will finally be able to pre-order one. UK customers will need to wait until the end of April for the device to go on sale, there is no word yet of a pre-order date in the UK.

Hard drive evolution could hit Microsoft XP users - 10th March 2010 |

Hard drives are about to undergo one of the biggest format shifts in 30 years. By early 2011 all hard drives will use an "advanced format" that changes how they go about saving the data people store on them. The move to the advanced format will make it easier for hard drive makers to produce bigger drives that use less power and are more reliable. Microsoft accelerating Windows 7 SP1 - 9th March 2010 |

Microsoft could release the first Service Pack for Windows 7 by the end of the year, according to reports. According to TechARP.com, Microsoft executives had internally scheduled a two-year development schedule for Windows 7 SP1, but have changed their mind in order to address "serious" performance problems.

Microsoft Office 2010 Technology Guarantee Launched - 8th March 2010 |

Microsoft and its qualified retailers will offer the Office 2010 Technology Guarantee which begins on 5th March 2010, and ends on 30th September 2010. The Office 2010 Technology Guarantee allows eligible consumers who purchase and activate Office 2007 or a new PC with Office 2007 between the eligibility dates, to download Office 2010 when it is available – at no additional charge. To redeem Tech Guarantee, eligible customers should visit www.office.com/techg when Office 2010 is available in their language/market. Microsoft will verify eligibility online and then customers can download Office 2010 at no additional cost. While Microsoft has historically offered a Tech Guarantee offer for Windows and Office products months before a new version is released, this is the first time they are offering digital fulfillment for the Tech Guarantee. Microsoft Office 2010 for consumers will be available in June, 2010; while the 2010 set of products, including Office 2010, SharePoint 2010, Visio 2010, and Project 2010 worldwide to business customers on 12th May.

Apple iPad arrives 3 April... but not in the UK - 5th March 2010 |

Apple has confirmed that the iPad will be released on 3 April. US customers will be able to pre-order the Wi-Fi and 3G models from Apple's online store from 12 March, though they'll be waiting until "late April" for the 3G model to be released. Europeans are not getting as wide a choice of browser as they may think, claims a web designer. From 1 March, European users of Microsoft's Internet Explorer began seeing pop-up screens asking them if they wanted to try a different browser. The choice was offered to settle an anti-trust case the European Commission brought against Microsoft.
