SCSI and SATA hard disks – which do you choose?
We can offers even flexibility to choose the disk storage that matches your specific performance and budgetary needs. SCSI disk technology is the right choice for networked storage, offering the best overall price/performance. SATA disk technology, derived from the storage used in desktop PCs, uses cheaper components for a much lower cost per megabyte than SCSI, but with lower performance and reliability. For reliable, high-performance application serving and storage, choose SCSI. But for cost-effective storage of infrequently accessed data (e.g., reference data), use SATA disks.
PCI Express for improved performance
New PCI Express (PCI-E) technology, supported on the latest ProLiant G4 servers*, boosts system bandwidth to up to 200 MB/s per lane – enough to meet user demands for years to come – dramatically increasing server performance and user productivity. For customers seeking to take advantage of this technology immediately, HP now supports single-function PCI-E adaptors with up to two ports or connectors. New ProLiant platforms include both PCI-X and PCI-E capable slots, either as standard or with the optional addition of PCI-E slots, enabling you to migrate to the new interface at your own pace.
* Standard or optional on selected models only.
Typical usages
Does your business need its first server?
For businesses with one to five staff members, a basic peer-to-peer setup using directly networked PCs may be sufficient to perform key functions. But this also limits performance, security and expansion possibilities – especially when you come to add more users. Server-based networks can help, providing the same essential networking capabilities of peer-to-peer, plus faster and sustained performance, enhanced security and reliability, and more flexibility to add PCs or upgrade systems.
Once you have five or more employees working together on a network, a server provides a central location. In addition, if you want to implement any of the following systems or applications, you’ll need a server: File and print/fax Mail and messaging Firewall or other security system Company Web site and/or intranet Database or e-commerce solution
Does your current server network need refreshing?
You may already have a server network in place, and be considering whether it needs to be refreshed and updated. Use these general questions to help you decide: Do you see growth in the future, or do you have to change business processes? Do you need to migrate from Microsoft® Windows NT® or Windows® 2000 Server? Do you want to standardise and consolidate your IT infrastructure? Do you want to run new applications? Do you need better performance and availability? Do you have problems in upgrading and supporting your current servers? Answering ‘yes’ to any of them suggests you should look at a new server solution. HP ProLiant offers risk-free migration to better performance, reliability and productivity, and will prove to be a more cost-effective choice for your business.
