COURSE DESCRIPTION

This three-day course covers the fundamentals common to every project. It concentrates on the mechanics of project management based on the PMI’s PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge). It follows the structure of a typical project lifecycle from start to finish picking out the key activities a project manager must engage in to successfully start, plan, run and close their project.

An additional two-day course provides insight into the leadership skills required from a project manager and together they provide a thorough examination of the complete range of skills needed to be a successful project manager.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

  • Carry out the Initiation of a project, using a simple yet secure way of agreeing the objectives, scope and other key parameters of their projects
  • Plan their project, allocating resources against tasks in an effective and realistic manner
  • Make their project plans more robust, by applying the principles of risk management
  • Engage effectively with their project stakeholders
  • Execute their projects in a secure manner, especially when using resources that are not directly under their control
  • Report accurately about progress on their projects, and deal effectively with issues that occur during execution
  • Close their projects in such a way as to learn positively from each project experience.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Anyone wishing to get a complete introduction to the fundamentals of project management or put a formal project framework into practice and those studying towards a PMI qualification.

It can award 21 PDUs towards maintain or gaining a PMI qualification.

DAY 1

  • Course Introduction Administration – objectives, delegates introductions
  • What makes a Succesful Project? Trainer led discussion of what to look for in a succesful project introduces key concepts and essential roles.
  • Project Life Cycles – Basic principles of project management, and typical stages in a project
  • Project Initiating – The process of Project Initiation is examined in detail
  • Case Study Exercise: Initiation Delegates work in teams to initiate a case study project
  • Exercise review – The case study project charters are reviewed and discussed
  • Planning Roadmap – An overview of the project planning process.
  • Milestone Planning Definition – example, hints and tips. Delegates add a milestone plan to their project charter.
  • Exercise review – The exercise is reviewed, and related back to the delegates own working environment.

DAY 2

  • Review of Day One – Includes the positioning of the Project Proposal in the Project Initiation process
  • Project Planning, Part 1 – We look at scope definition and sequencing
  • Case Study Exercise – Delegates produce a work breakdown structure and a precedence network for their project
  • Planning part 2; Estimating, and Resources Practical approaches to establishing the cost and duration of the tasks are identified, and the problems of assigning resources to tasks are considered.
  • Case Study exercise; Estimating and Resourcing Delegates continue the development of their plan.
  • Planning part 3; Scheduling: CPM, Gantt The practical application and uses of techniques such as critical path method are discussed
  • Case Study exercise; scheduling Delegates produce a schedule for their project
  • Planning part 5; Budget and QA Approaches to managing quality and budget are identified.
  • Case Study; Budget Delegates produce a budget for their project

DAY 3

  • Review Day Two Includes discussion on Contingency
  • Risk Management Simple yet powerful techniques for improving the chances of the project running smoothly are established.
  • Case Study: Risk Management Delegates enhance their plans by applying risk management
  • Stakeholder Management Delegates discuss ways to identify and mobilise the stakeholders in their projects.
  • Executing Projects The PMI process of Project Execution is examined in detail.
  • Controlling Projects Techniques for measuring and reporting progress, managing issues and changes
  • Case Study: execution The case study project will go through a simulated execution, and the teams will use their plans to deal with issues
  • Closing Projects Contract and Administration closedown are considered, as well as the final standing down of the project team
  • Course close Final Questions, Course Certificates, evaluation.
