There has recently been an increase in scams and now scammers are exploiting the fear and doubt surrounding Covid-19.
They are targeting people with anxiety to get people to buy things or click on things they wouldn’t have otherwise.
Hackers and scammers that operate on the “dark web” have found a new angle – anxiety over Covid-19.
The dark web is an encrypted part of the internet that can be accessed using popular networks such as Tor. The Tor browser is privacy-focused, meaning it can be obscure who is using it and what data is being accessed.
Since this pandemic, marketplaces on the dark web have seen a rise in Covid-19 related products and services. People have seen selling products such as masks, gowns and gloves.
Criminals knew there would be an increase of sales for these types of products and people would rush to buy them but as a result of this the products aren’t cheap; an Australian Institute of Criminology report found the average fake vaccine sourced from china was selling for between £8-£12,000.
One of the reasons for the rise in sales is because fraudsters have turned away from their normal methods of making money on the dark web – such as selling fake flights because the industry is currently dormant.
As people are working from home hackers and scammers see this is a greater opportunity as there is generally a lack of cyber security in place.
We have recently posted a blog out about the recent rise of phishing scams, the scammers hope to gain login details or personal data which they can then use to steal money or your identity. The scams have started from the scammers pretending to be from the NHS or even an email from the HMRC.
We would like to make you all aware the scammers are still up to their old tricks despite everything that is going on please be careful when clicking on links and answering phone calls that are trying to sell you something.
