Security Solutions for your business: What do you need to know in order to keep your business safe?
These days the market is saturated with virus protection and security products so, what are the basics you need to know in order to keep your business safe?
As a business it can be very confusing when looking at security software to ensure that your systems and network are protected. The trouble is there are too many options available and not enough basic information on what the software provides.
However having said this there is a minimum level of security that any business should have. Many businesses think that if they have anti-virus software alone this will protect them but unfortunately this is not the case – this is just one layer among several.
Here’s what you need:
Anti-virus is a term referring to products that combat a wide variety of malicious threats including viruses, spyware, Trojans, worms, rootkits, scareware and more. Along with firewall protection, anti-virus is an absolutely essential component of any system’s protection.
A Firewall is your first line of defence and will block suspicious network connections to and from your computer. It will assist in protecting your computers from hackers and other malicious code that is sent looking for vulnerable computers.
This will block dodgy attachments and phishing attempts – emails that look genuine but are scams trying to trick you into sharing sensitive information.
Ensure that all of your external connections are encrypted. If you have employees working from home or out on the road they will often be transferring crucial data via the internet and therefore you need to ensure that the link is encrypted in order for the data to remain private and integral. To do this you require an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificate, this is a digital certificate that authenticates the identity of a website and encrypts information sent to the server using SSL technology.
By ensuring you have the above in place, you reduce the risk of your business becoming a victim to cyber-crime.
WHAT DOESN’T SECURITY SOFTWARE PROTECT US FROM?
It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that your business is safe because you have security software. Security software is only one element of your security strategy. It can’t protect you from natural disasters (like fire or flooding), human error (like deleting business critical files), equipment failure or theft.
Additionally, security software is not 100% guaranteed. Once you have it, the chances of your business suffering a malware infection are dramatically reduced. No security package is fool proof. Some viruses and malware take specific steps to make themselves hard to detect, and if you encounter a new piece of malware you might find your software doesn’t yet recognise it.
In light of this our No.1 rule is to educate your staff, make them aware that security software is never 100% guaranteed and encourage them to be very vigilant when opening emails, clicking on links, opening attachments and also when browsing the internet.
FREE SECURITY SOFTWARE
We often get businesses asking about the free security packages on the market. These packages tend to provide very basic protection and they are generally not designed for businesses.
The software can often take longer to set up and manage, and the features are limited compared to paid-for software.
Ultimately, if it doesn’t fit your requirements the free software may be a false economy and in our experience it simply does not deliver the protection businesses need.
