The Importance of Data

Data Backup is something that no business can afford to neglect, it is one of the most important areas of IT. Business today relies on local access to live data – it is worth up to £750,000 in a smaller business. Proposals, client data, records, financials, marketing databases, research, designs, specifications – have all taken years to accumulate. 20Mb of data is typically worth £50,000 and the average data loss costs a small firm £8,000. Lose data and you’ll lose business.

Whether through hardware failure, human error, fire, theft or accidental damage, data loss can have a catastrophic effect. Imagine the impact on your business if you were to lose all your company accounts, sales records, correspondence, customer records and emails.

What does Data backup mean?

To put it simply, a backup is a complete copy of your data, its the process of duplicating or archiving files for the purpose of being able to restore them in case of data loss.

Why should you backup your Data?

Data loss can be caused by a multitude of things ranging from Computer viruses or Ransomware and Cyber Crime to hardware failures to fire, flood, theft etc and its important to take all of these into account.

Should your business be effected by data loss it would take considerable time and expense to get your data back, and if you do not have an backup of your data then there is a chance you may lose your data altogether, making it extremely difficult to continue as a business. The only way to protect a business against valuable data loss is by regular backups.

Businesses need to protect their critical data with a solid and robust backup and replication program to ensure that no matter what happens your data is intact.

Backup strategy: 3-2-1

Think about your businesses backup in two parts: A local, easily-accessible backup system and one that’s stored offsite.

  1. Local copy – This is where your data is stored as the primary access for your users.
  2. Local backup – A local backup gives you immediate, instant access to whatever data you might need back, regardless of whether it’s deleted, overwritten, or lost.
  3. Offsite backup – This is the most important of the three. If anything happens to your business in terms of natural disaster, your data will be safe.

The 3-2-1 strategy is as follows:

  1. Keep at least THREE copies of your data – this will include the original copy plus at least two backups
  2. Keep the backed-up data on TWO different storage types – hardware will fail at some point and therefore two devices of the same type have a much greater risk of failing around the same time than of two different devices.
  3. Keep at least ONE backup offsite – this is to ensure that you can restore your data in the event that all the local copies are destroyed.
