The End of IDSN is approaching
BT announced back in 2016 that by 2020 customers will no longer be able to purchase ISDN and PSTN circuits. This is with the view to phasing out these networks entirely in 2025. This means that businesses have just over 5 years to look for an alternative solution for their telephony needs.
Why is BT switching to IP technology?
BT introduced ISDN lines nationwide back in 1986 and since then connectivity has greatly improved. The investment and national roll out of superfast fibre broadband and new ethernet products has facilitated the growth of hosted and SIP technologies.
These provide a far superior performance for businesses at a lower cost, than traditional ISDN lines.
What are the alternatives?
IP based solutions such as VoIP is the top alternative for businesses.
VoIP is a cloud-based telephony solution, it involves moving your whole phone system online, so all your calls are sent over your internet connection.
With a VoIP phone solution businesses benefit from a wide range of additional features such as call recording, receiving voicemails via email, call queuing and unified communications and the ability to access the system on multiple devices such as a mobile, tablet and desktop.
Top 5 Benefits of VoIP
• Savings – We have saved several of our customer over 80% off their existing phone bill due to cheaper calls and no more expensive line rental.
• Greater flexibility – Flexible working is simple, use your extension number from any location with an internet connection – hot desking, working from home or abroad is easy.

• Scalability – Companies using a VoIP system have the great advantage of being able to easily add new phone numbers or extensions (inc. voice mail inboxes) via the web, without the need for extra costs and setup time associated with traditional telephony.
What should your business do?
Although 2025 may seem a long way from now, 2020 will be fast approaching. So, if your current ISDN/PSTN telephony contract is due for renewal within the next few years, now is the time to start looking at alternatives and the benefits of VoIP and SIP technologies.
